What is it about : A book detailing the many violent cases along the years of our outwardly pleasant and cordial Hong Kong, speak of gory psychopathic homicides, manslaughter resulting from wronged love, throw-the-wife-off-the-boat-and-run-with-the-insurance-payout and of course the most obvious of all murder motives, money, lust and revenge, this book has them all.
Some thoughts after having read the book : Here are some of the gory, even ingenious final treatments being dished out by the murderers cum slayers - marinated heavily with salt (pepper being used in another memorable case) to hide the overwhelming rancid odor of a decomposing body, chopped up and cooked as fillings to steam buns (buchered up, steamed and baked by a homely housewife in another case involving culinary skills), amorous husband strangled to death with his penis chopped off and flushed down the loo, body parts cemented at the bottom of a water tank (underneath a wood burning stove in another grizzly case), and a dead body packed into a suitcase, doused with kerosene and burnt at a public car park. Yeh, us citizens in Hong Kong find innovative and self-deceiving ways of slaying and ridding unwanted dead bodies.
Would I recommend this book to you : Through this calalogue of gruesome homicides and bloody slayings, this book is a good reminder to ourselves that not all is well in this modern Asian megacity where sickos' abound as well as those mentally challenged, neurotic, greedy, lustful, jealous, and those enduring a life of gruelling pressure, could suddenly flip to the "I've had enough" mode when pushed beyond their tolerance. Think Michael Douglas in Falling Down. Still want to live here ？Go read.
